In spanish the words have gender, they are either masculine or feminine. There is not oficial rule to identify them, but there are some formulas that can help you to guess the gender.
Words that ends in O, R,S and L are usually masculine, and they use the article EL, like:
With O:
El oso, el carro, el perro, el taco, el rodeo, el burrito, el lago, etc
BUTwe have some exceptions like: la mano
With R: El amor, el motor, el matador, el mar, el pajar, etc.
With S (words that are not plural): El paraguas, el sacapuntas, el compás, etc.
All the days of the week: el lunes, el martes. el miércoles, el jueves, el viernes, el sábado, and el domingo.
And all the numbers (by themselves) are masculine: el uno, el dos, el tres, etc.
With L: El animal, el hospital, el arsenal, el tamal, etc.
Words that ends in A, -DAD, -CIÓN, and -SIÓN are usually feminine, and they use the article LA:
With A: La silla, la ventana, la cama, la osa, la niña, la cámara, la fórmula, etc.
BUT we have exceptions like: el cometa, el planeta, el programa, el poeta, el día, el clima, el idioma, el mapa, el papá, el policía, el drama.
With -DAD: La ciudad, la maldad, la casualidad, la cantidad, la cualidad, etc.
With -CIÓN: La canción, la estación, la inmunización, etc.
With -SIÓN: La visión. la mansión, la pasión, la fusión, etc.

doll + blend= doble and eh + red= erre
The sound of this letter does not have a similar sound in english, just try to pronounce it strongly, rolling the sound of rr like in burrito.
Tip on pronunciation: hold the tip of your tongue touching the front roof of your mouth, and then blow air between them.

NOTE: There are not spanish words using this letter, the purpose to have it in the alphabet is to be able to pronounce foreign words like whiskey, web, walkman, etcetera.
23. Spanish letter X x Name: equis, similar to eh-kiss
The letter X has theses different sounds:
When a word begin with X, the sound is similar to the english letter “S”, like in xilófono, xerografía, xenofobia, and Xochimilco.
When using x between vowels or it’s placed before a consonant, the sound is similar to english “GS”, like in the words exacto, léxico, máximo, extracción, and excavación. Samples:
Between vowels: exacto sounds similar to egg + suck + toh
Between consonants:extracciónsoundssimilar to eggs + track + see + on
In some words the sound of x is like the english “sh” in xola and xoloitzcuintle. And, like english “h” like in México, Oaxaca, and Texas.
